In the United States, the average male sexual desire has almost doubled. But that does not mean a man should be treated for low libido, the research shows.
In a new study, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh studied how men who used to be able to get sexually active — like those who said they were unable to — responded differently to the same kind of medication — Viagra or Cialis.
They found that women who took these drugs had a higher probability of having low libido and a lower probability of having erectile dysfunction, compared to those who didn’t take them. They also had an improvement in sexual activity over time.
A few of the women in the study who took the drug did not show any improvement in their sexual activity.
“It’s really surprising,” said study co-author Lisa M. Czubak, of Pittsburgh, who is also co-lead investigator on the study. “It’s really reassuring.”
The men in the study were randomly assigned to take the drugs and a control group of normal healthy men who weren’t taking any of the drugs.
They had an average age of 35, and their sex assigned was male. They were also assigned to take the drug for six months, after which they took a placebo for a few days before going on an exercise.
When they took the drug for six months, they took Viagra, Cialis, or both and asked them to report the number of orgasms they had for the three months.
Viagra and Cialis are FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction. Cialis is also FDA-approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. Both drugs were shown in the study to work, Czubak said. “It is important to note that we were able to measure the results of these drugs in a healthy, healthy male.”
Viagra, Cialis, and the drugs studied were taken twice a day, with the drug taken 1 hour before sex and the drug taken 3 hours after sex.
